A NEW BRIDGE FOR BRISTOL AT FINZELS REACH

A planning application for the first new bridge to span Bristol’s Floating Harbour for more than 15 years has been registered with Bristol City Council.  The new bridge will link the Finzels Reach development to Castle Park and improve wider connections between Cabot Circus and Temple Meads.

Subject to planning permission being granted, the new bridge designed for pedestrians and cyclists is to be installed in late spring next year and will be named Finzels Bridge in recognition of philanthropist Conrad Finzel’s contribution to the city.  The last bridge constructed in Bristol was Pero’s Bridge, linking Queen Square and Harbourside. Opened in 1999 it has become an established pedestrian route and a city centre landmark in its own right.

The elegant timber decked structure incorporating steel balustrades and supporting columns of Finzels Bridge has been designed by Bristol-based architects The Bush Consultancy with award winning lighting designer Michael Grubb, chartered engineers Clarke Bond and Key Transport all contributing to the final specification. The 90 metre long bridge will take a gentle sloping route across the Floating Harbour avoiding the need for steps and lifts.

The new bridge forms a significant part of a £5 million investment in the infrastructure and public realm works at Finzels Reach.  It will be fabricated off site and delivered in sections which are to be transported down the Floating Harbour to the location of the bridge and craned into position using pontoon mounted cranes – sure to be an event in itself!

Acquired in December 2014 by Clifton based Cubex and their funding partner, Palmer Capital, Finzels Reach when completed will offer nearly 450 one and two bedroom apartments, over 150,000ft 2 of office space along with supporting leisure and amenity uses including a proposed 161 bedroom hotel.

Now open to pedestrians and cyclists, construction works have progressed this year to see Temple Street extended and East Tucker Street formed through the development to recreate the medieval street pattern.  Street food traders have been invited to trade at Finzels Reach Street Food Fridays throughout August offering neighbouring businesses and members of the public the chance to make good use of the space with some outside seating also available.

Gavin Bridge, Director at Cubex, said:  “It was a priority for us in the early stages of ownership to open up the development which has such a historic significance for the city.  It’s been wonderful to see the development come alive and to see people making the most of what is a car-free sanctuary in the bustling centre of the city.  We are looking forward to bringing forward further elements of the scheme this year including the hotel, restaurants and the launch of the next phase of waterside apartments.”
